The requirements for the finish machining of cylinder linings are defined by the quality characteristics of roundness and cylindricity and the form of the surface profile. In the combustion engine, however, distortion of the cylinders occurs due to the fitting and operation of the engine. Since the ability of the piston rings to reliably seal the combustion chamber is compromised, engine efficiency decreases and the oil consumption increases.
The form honing process developed by NAGEL for this application already includes the distortion in the production process so that during engine operation the result is an almost perfect cylindrical form.
