Superfinishing machines SPH, SPHK and SPV

Superfinishing machines with rotating tools are used for the machining of spherical surfaces and flat surfaces with self-sharpening superfinishing cup wheels or superfinishing sleeves.

Typical for flat surface machining is the parallel displacement of tool and workpiece axis and a low speed. In contrast to grinding and fine turning there are no changes to the microstructure in the edge zone through thermal changes to the surface. As high level of overlapping results in a very good correction of the flatness. At the same time the plane parallelism and wobble can be improved. The workpiece and cup wheel counter rotate.

With the machining of spherical surfaces the axes of symmetry and rotation of the tool and workpiece intersect. The very high form correction is achieved by a high level of overlapping. Also here the tool and workpiece rotate in opposite directions.

Ceramic bond diamond and CBN cup wheels and respective finishing sleeves are used as tools. Depending on the workpiece volumes to be machined and the feed of the workpieces, different machine concepts are available with a horizontal and vertical design. On request we also produce customer-specific machines.

The range of workpieces includes the contact surfaces of planet gears and gearwheels, metallic sealing surfaces of components of injection pumps, ball pins and glide shoes of hydraulic construction parts, ball valves, ball pins used in vehicle construction and medical protheses.

Superfinishing machines UF / TF / SE / SRH

Plunge cut superfinishing machines are used for the machining of single and multiple cylindrical or similar surfaces of workpieces which are clamped between centres or clamped in a chuck.

An oscillating and rotating movement is typical of the superfinishing. The generation of the oscillation frequency is generally made pneumatically and electromechanically. Compared to electromechanical drives, the pneumatic drives are characterised by lower maintenance costs and a higher oscillation frequency of 40 to 50 Hz. Electromechanical drives are mainly used for oscillation frequencies up to 25 Hz or for lower oscillation amplitudes.

Depending on the requirements, superfinishing stones or tapes are used as tools. These can be in a fixed or movable position.

A variety of machine concepts and sizes are available which take into account the dimensions of the workpiece to be machined and the used tools. On request we can also manufacture customer-specific machines.

Examples of workpieces are crankshafts, camshafts, eccentric shafts, rocker arm shafts, gearbox shafts, gear racks, shafts, balance shafts, impellers, all types of offset shafts and axes and control gears.

Superfinishing machines VARIOFIN / ECOFIN

Centerless through-feed and plunge-cut superfinishing machines are used for the machining of cylindrical or similar surface areas of workpieces which cannot be clamped between centres or held in a chuck.

An oscillating and rotating movement is typical of superfinishing. Generation of the oscillation frequency with centerless superfinishing is usually made pneumatically with an oscillation frequency of 40 to 50 Hz and an adjustable oscillation amplitude of up to 6 mm. Furthermore, the cutting capacity can be increased by an additional optional stroke.

Depending on the diameter of the workpiece to be machined between 1 to 200 mm and required cutting capacity a variety of machine sizes are available.

The range of workpieces includes needles, cylindrical rollers, taper rollers, axles, all types of non-stepped shafts, piston rods for pneumatic and hydraulic drives, guide columns, cam followers, external and internal ball bearing rings, ball pins, gudgeon pins and valve stems.

Usually abrasives made from ceramic bonded silicon carbide are used for the machining of steel and cast iron. If more cutting capacity is required, for higher circumferential speeds also abrasives made from ceramic bonded special fused alumina can be used. For the same grain size these generate a slightly greater roughness than silicon carbide tools.


Ceramic superfinishing abrasives

Usually abrasives made from ceramic bonded silicon carbide are used for the machining of steel and cast iron. If more cutting capacity is required, for higher circumferential speeds also abrasives made from ceramic bonded special fused alumina can be used. For the same grain size these generate a slightly greater roughness than silicon carbide tools.

Soft and tough materials are machined with special, synthetic bonded fused alumina abrasives containing graphite. Diamond or CBN abrasives are used to machine very hard materials such as carbide, glass, ceramics and others.

 

The following general rules are valid:

  • Surfaces to be machined with a greater roughness require a coarser grain of abrasive
  • Harder materials to be machined require a softer abrasive
  • Surfaces to be machined with a greater roughness require an abrasive which is correspondingly harder
