Process kinematics

According to the standard DIN 8589 part 14 short-stroke honing, generally known as superfinishing, is defined as cutting with non-geometrically defined cutting edges. The process uses multi-edge cutting tools which execute overlapping cutting movements with two speed components.

Relatively speaking, one component always alternates the cutting movement so that the machined surface is characterised by machining traces with a cross-hatch pattern. Depending on the type of tool, further differentiation between stone and tape honing is possible [DIN8589]. Furthermore, differentiation is made between the form of elements to be machined.

Short-stroke honing is also commonly referred to as honing, external honing, stone finishing, tape finishing, micro finishing, polishing or mostly as superfinishing.
